Itchy scalp
An itchy or irritated scalp is uncomfortable and can have many causes. The constant scratching is enough to make sufferers crazy. Do you also suffer from itching and just want to scratch your skin off?
Constant scratching is, however, not the solution. While it may provide temporary relief, it also damages or even injures the skin's natural protective barrier. This is evident from the skin becoming itchier or even inflamed as bacteria can penetrate the skin more easily. This causes a vicious cycle of itching and scratching.
Possible causes of an itchy scalp include:
- Allergies
- Skin disorders (e.g. neurodermatitis, psoriasis)
- Head lice
- Diabetes
- Side effects of drugs
- Unsuitable shampoo, styling or dyeing the hair
- Cold and therefore dry winter climate
- Dry scalp (due to e.g. aggressive shampoos, washing the hair too often or old age)
An itchy scalp is often accompanied by disruption of the skin's natural protective barrier, which is no longer sufficiently stable and has deficiencies. The skin then loses too much moisture and starts to dry out. A dry scalp causes not just an uncomfortable feeling of tightness, but often an irritating itch as well. The scalp can also become flaky.
Treating an itchy scalp
It is generally advisable to use a mild shampoo that does not further disrupt the skin's natural protective barrier or further dry out the scalp. If possible, those prone to a dry scalp should not wash their hair too frequently in order to avoid disrupting the scalp's moisture balance even more. Another tip is to blow-dry the hair on a cooler setting as heat can also irritate the scalp.
Sufferers are recommended to use medicinal care products that are specifically designed to meet the needs of itchy and dry scalps.
Linola PLUS Scalp Tonic and Linola PLUS Shampoo for itchy scalps
Regular use of Linola PLUS products can provide long-term relief of itching and burning. Linola PLUS Scalp Tonic and Linola PLUS Shampoo were specially developed to provide intensive care for itchy, burning and irritated scalps. They contain a unique combination of long-time proven linoleic acid and a special plant extract from the Echinacea purpurea (purple coneflower) root.
Linoleic acid is essential for an intact stratum corneum. However, the body cannot produce linoleic acid on its own – like a vitamin it must be taken in on a regular basis.
Extracts of Echinacea purpurea are known for their proven health-boosting properties and are used to treat a variety of skin problems. They contain substances that relieve itching and reduce inflammation.
Linola PLUS Scalp tonic was specially developed to care for sensitive scalps. It effectively soothes the damaged scalp and has been proven to help reduce or even completely relieve itching, burning and the feeling of tightness. The special applicator can be used to apply Linola PLUS Scalp Tonic to the entire scalp or to individual, affected areas.
Linola PLUS Shampoo's skin-friendly properties make it particularly suitable for gently cleansing the hair for itchy, burning or irritated scalps. It can be used by itself or ideally to wash out the Linola PLUS Scalp Tonic.
All Linola PLUS products are available from pharmacies.
